new legal science

This superior legal formation was made possible by the institution of the new school for the study of law, set up in the form ofan association between students and teachers, that took the technical name of 'university'. Universitiies spread from Bologna (or in the case of theology from Paris) throughout Italy and Europe, and were attended by thousands of students. For centuries, from Padua to Orléans, from Heidelberg to Prague, from Oxford to Coimbra, the teaching model originated in Bologna, based upon the Corpus iuris, was adopted everywhere.
